Dynamic Range Evolution: From 100 Nits to 1,000+ Nits

Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) was engineered in the cathode-ray tube (CRT) era and codified in ITU-R Recommendation BT.709. It specifies an absolute peak brightness of 100 candelas per square meter (nits) and roughly 6 to 7 stops of printable dynamic range. In contrast, human vision perceives over 14 stops of simultaneous dynamic range in daylight.

High Dynamic Range (HDR), codified under ITU-R BT.2100, expands peak mastering capability up to 1,000, 4,000, or even 10,000 nits. More critically, HDR expands shadow resolution and eliminates the harsh shoulder roll-off of SDR, allowing metallic specular glints, practical lighting fixtures, and direct sunlight reflections to retain true-to-life vibrancy without washing out skin tones.

OETF & EOTF Physics: PQ (ST 2084) vs HLG (BT.2100)

To understand HDR delivery, colorists must differentiate between two competing transfer standards:

Perceptual Quantizer (SMPTE ST 2084 / PQ): Developed by Dolby and used in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Unlike traditional gamma curves, PQ is an absolute luminance system. Code value 512 represents exactly 100 nits on every certified monitor on earth, while code value 1023 represents 10,000 nits. If your display only reaches 1,000 nits, it must tone-map content above 1,000 nits.

Hybrid Log-Gamma (ARIB STD-B67 / HLG): Co-developed by the BBC and NHK for live broadcast. It is a relative system. The lower half of the curve behaves like standard gamma 2.4, while the top half transitions into a logarithmic curve. HLG requires no dynamic metadata, making it ideal for live sports and YouTube streaming.

The Average Picture Level (APL) Trap

Do not treat an HDR timeline like an SDR image with brightness cranked up! Professional HDR cinema masters keep standard middle-gray skin tones at the exact same luminance as SDR (around 20–30 nits / 40–50 IRE). The 900+ nit headroom is reserved strictly for specular highlights, neon tubes, and direct sunlight.

The Dolby Vision Master Pipeline & SDR Downmapping

When delivering a project for Netflix or Apple TV+, mastering in HDR first is mandatory. In DaVinci Resolve Color Management, set Timeline Color Space to DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate, Output Color Space to HDR (Rec.2020 ST2084 1000 nits), and enable Dolby Vision 4.0 analysis. Resolve measures the Maximum Content Light Level (MaxCLL) and Maximum Frame-Average Light Level (MaxFALL) on every cut, then generates dynamic XML trims that instruct SDR televisions exactly how to downmap the image without clipping highlights.

Hardware Realities: Clean Feeds vs Operating System Color Management

Never grade HDR through your operating system's desktop window. Windows HDR and macOS ColorSync apply aggressive tone-mapping and color profile conversions to your GUI viewer. To achieve bit-accurate mastering, you must route your video through an I/O card (such as Blackmagic DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K) directly to a certified 10-bit reference display supporting 100% DCI-P3 coverage.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Should I grade my project in SDR first or HDR first?

Always grade in HDR first. An HDR master contains the full sensor luminance and wide color gamut (Rec.2020/P3). DaVinci Resolve and Dolby Vision can automatically derive an SDR version using tone-mapping trim passes. Doing the reverse (grading SDR first) results in compressed highlight data that cannot be expanded back into HDR without severe banding.

What is the key difference between HDR10 (PQ) and HLG?

HDR10 uses the Perceptual Quantizer (SMPTE ST 2084) electro-optical transfer function with fixed absolute luminance values up to 10,000 nits, requiring metadata. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma / ARIB STD-B67) uses relative scene luminance, allowing a single video stream to display normally on legacy SDR screens while rendering HDR on compatible displays without metadata.

Can I master HDR on a consumer OLED TV connected via HDMI from my computer?

Consumer OLED TVs employ aggressive Auto-Brightness Limiting (ABL) and internal dynamic tone-mapping chips that alter luminance unpredictably. Professional HDR mastering requires a dedicated Blackmagic DeckLink or UltraStudio PCIe card outputting unadulterated 10-bit 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 SDI/HDMI signals to a calibrated reference display.
