The 0 EV Trap on Sony Sensors
If you expose Sony S-Log3 using your camera's standard multi-meter at '0 EV' (the center mark on the viewfinder), your shadows will almost certainly be ruined by chroma noise and digital sensor chatter.
S-Log3 was engineered by Sony engineers for high-end CineAlta cameras (VENICE, F55) with 15+ stops of latitude. The curve is intentionally flat in the lower IRE registers to preserve maximum shadow detail, but on mirrorless 10-bit sensors (FX3, A7S III, A7 IV, FX30), placing midtones at standard 0 EV forces your shadows directly into the thermal noise floor.
Figure 2: The calibrated IRE ladder for Sony S-Log3. Note that 18% middle gray sits at 41 IRE, not 50 IRE.
The Golden S-Log3 Exposure Target (+1.7 EV ETTR)
Always expose Sony S-Log3 between +1.3 EV and +1.7 EV brighter than normal on your camera's exposure meter. In post-production, pulling down an overexposed clean S-Log3 clip by 1.7 stops gives you velvety deep blacks with zero digital noise.
When you expose S-Log3 at 0.0 EV, you are placing dark jackets, hair, and interior shadow detail into that bottom 1% zone, where it rubs directly against the sensor's physical electronic noise floor.
By overexposing the entire scene by +1.7 to +2.0 EV:
- Your shadows are pushed 2 full stops above the noise floor into pristine, data-rich midtone registers.
- Because Sony's BIONZ XR sensor has massive highlight retention (up to 6 full stops above middle gray), your clouds and light sources still will not clip.
- In post-production, you simply pull down the exposure slider by -1.7 stops. All that noise disappears into inky, smooth black tones.
Sony FX3 and A7S III have dual native base ISOs in S-Log3: ISO 800 (Low) and ISO 12,800 (High). Shooting at ISO 6,400 or 10,000 is dramatically noisier than shooting at ISO 12,800! Always switch immediately from ISO 800 directly to ISO 12,800 when low light requires it.
The Precise S-Log3 IRE Ladder
Never guess your exposure using the camera LCD screen outdoors. Configure your Zebras or use a false color monitor with these exact mathematical IRE benchmarks:
Zebra Set to 94%
Highlight Clipping Ceiling: Hard ceiling at IRE 94%. Zebras set to 94% on white paper ensures zero highlight clipping.
Custom Zebra 1 at 41%
18% Neutral Mid-Grey: Target IRE 41% (ยฑ2%). Place a Kodak gray card in front of your subject's face.
Zebra at 50% - 55%
Caucasian / Light Skin Tones: Target IRE 50% - 55%.
Dark / Melanin-Rich Skin Tones: Target IRE 35% - 45%.
Zebra at 61%
90% White Reference Card: Target IRE 61%.
