CANON LOG SENSOR ARCHITECTURE

C-Log vs C-Log2 vs C-Log3: IRE Exposure Matrix

Canon provides three distinct Log curves. Choosing the right gamma and locking your IRE waveform values is essential for clean shadow recovery and pristine skin tones.

C-LOG 2 Up to 16 Stops

Canon Log 2 (Maximum Dynamic Range)

Delivers up to 16 stops of dynamic range with a logarithmic curve modeled directly on Cineon film density. Generates the highest shadow latitude, but requires careful noise reduction in uncontrolled low light. Best for Cinema EOS C70 and C300 Mk III.

18% Grey Target: 34% IRE
Highlight Clip: 100% IRE
C-LOG 3 14 Stops (Low Noise)

Canon Log 3 (Balanced & Low Noise)

Tuned for 14 stops with a linear shadow distribution that prevents shadow grain buildup. Much easier to grade than C-Log2, perfectly preserving natural skin tones. The recommended standard for EOS R5, R6 Mark II, and R8 mirrorless cameras.

18% Grey Target: 35% IRE
Highlight Clip: 99% IRE

Step-by-Step Color Grading Workflow

Apply mathematical transforms across DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, and CapCut Desktop

01

DaVinci Resolve Color Space Transform (CST)

  • • In your node tree, create an Output Node right before your final look.
  • • Add the Color Space Transform (CST) OFX plugin.
  • • Set Input Color Space: Canon Cinema Gamut, Input Gamma: Canon Log 3.
  • • Set Output Color Space: Rec.709, Output Gamma: Gamma 2.4.
  • • Under Tone Mapping, choose 'DaVinci' with White Point Adaptation checked.
Method: Mathematical CST OFX
02

Adobe Premiere Pro Lumetri 3D LUT

  • • Select your Canon clip on the timeline and open the Lumetri Color panel.
  • • Under Basic Correction, click 'Input LUT' dropdown and select Browse.
  • • Select the downloaded canon-clog3-cinemagamut-to-bt709-widedr.cube profile.
  • • If shadows appear slightly clipped, lift the Exposure slider by +0.3 to +0.7 before the LUT.
Method: 65x Hardware .CUBE
03

CapCut Desktop LUT Setup

  • • Place your C-Log3 footage onto the CapCut timeline.
  • • In the top-right inspector, go to Adjustment > LUT and tick the checkbox.
  • • Click 'Add Local LUT' and select canon-clog3-cinemagamut-to-bt709-widedr.cube.
  • • Adjust Strength to 100% for full Rec.709 normalization.
Method: Universal 3D LUT Table
