How to Install & Apply 3D LUTs
CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro & VN
A colorist's technical guide on loading industry-standard .CUBE lookup tables without clipped highlights, posterized skin tones, or banding. Learn correct node hierarchies and opacity blending across desktop NLEs and mobile apps.
The Universal Signal Chain: Where Does a LUT Belong?
The #1 beginner mistake is dropping a 3D LUT directly onto uncorrected video. A .CUBE lookup table is a rigid 3D coordinate transform; if your source clip is overexposed or color-cast, the LUT will permanently crush highlight roll-off and clip skin tones into plastic.
Exposure compensation, contrast, and White Balance. Modifies unmapped sensor data before compression.
Camera Log to Rec.709 normalization (e.g. Sony S-Log3 or Apple Log). 100% strict mathematical mapping.
MonoLUTs film emulations, split toning, and contrast character. Dial opacity back to taste.
Vignette, organic 35mm film grain, halation, and final sharpening for master delivery.
1. CapCut Desktop (PC & Mac) & Mobile App
Short-form vertical & 4K timeline grading
A CapCut Desktop (Windows & macOS):
Timeline Best Practice- Download your chosen .CUBE LUT file from MonoLUTs and extract the zip archive.
- Pro Workflow: Avoid applying LUTs to individual cut clips. Instead, navigate to Media > Adjustment in the top-left panel and drag an Adjustment Track onto track V2 directly above your video timeline. This ensures a consistent grade across all cuts.
- Select the Adjustment Track on your timeline. In the right-hand Inspector panel, switch to the Adjustment tab and scroll down to LUT.
- Check the LUT checkbox and click + Add LUT (or the folder icon).
- Select your
.cubefile. CapCut immediately renders the 3D color lookup in real time. - Fine-tune the Strength Slider: 100% is frequently oversaturated for natural skin tones. Reduce strength to 65% – 80% for a rich, filmic look.
B CapCut Mobile (iPhone & Android):
Direct Files Import
Transfer your unzipped .cube file into your iPhone's Files app or Android Downloads folder. In CapCut mobile, select your clip or adjustment layer > tap Adjust > Filters > Add Local LUT. Select the file to add it permanently to your mobile palette.
2. DaVinci Resolve 18 & 19 (Free & Studio)
32-bit floating point node color science
Bulk installation into DaVinci Resolve's native directory:
- Launch DaVinci Resolve and open any project.
- Press Shift + 9 (or click the bottom-right gear icon) to open Project Settings.
- Select Color Management on the left sidebar. Under Lookup Tables, click the Open LUT Folder button.
- In your operating system file manager, create a new subfolder named
MonoLUTsand copy your.cubefiles inside. - Return to DaVinci Resolve and click Update Lists. The LUTs are now instantly indexed across all projects without restarting the software!
- Switch to the Color Page (Shift + 6). Right-click on your node graph > LUT > MonoLUTs > [Selected LUT].
DaVinci Resolve does not place a slider on the node itself. To reduce LUT intensity: Select the LUT node > switch to the Key Palette (the key icon in the central grading bar) > adjust Key Output > Gain from 1.000 down to 0.600 (60% strength).
3. Adobe Premiere Pro (2024 / 2025)
Lumetri Color: Basic Correction vs Creative Tab Architecture
Under Lumetri's Basic Correction tab, the Input LUT slot processes mathematical data before Premiere's exposure and white balance controls with zero intensity adjustment. If you load an aesthetic look here, you cannot dial back opacity and clipped whites cannot be recovered.
Technical Transform (Input LUT)
Reserved solely for camera manufacture curves (e.g. Sony S-Log3 to Rec.709, Apple Log to Rec.709). Transforms flat Log gamma into standard SDR contrast.
Creative Look (Creative Tab)
Where MonoLUTs film looks belong. Enables the Intensity Slider (0% to 200%) and preserves all primary exposure sliders for highlight safety.
- In your Project panel, click New Item > Adjustment Layer and drag it across track V2 above your edited clips.
- Open the Lumetri Color panel (Window > Lumetri Color).
- Expand the Creative tab, click the Look dropdown menu, and select Browse....
- Choose your
.cubefile. Adjust the Intensity slider between 60% and 80% for balanced saturation.
4. Apple Final Cut Pro
Custom LUT Effect & Wide Color Gamut
- Open the Effects Browser (Cmd + 5).
- In the left sidebar, click Color, locate the Custom LUT effect, and drag it onto your timeline clip or Adjustment Clip.
- Open the Video Inspector (Cmd + 4).
- In the Custom LUT controls, click the LUT dropdown and choose Choose Custom LUT....
- Select your
.cubefile. Set Input Space to Rec. 709 (or Apple Log for iPhone ProRes log footage). - Use the Mix slider (0.00 to 1.00) to balance intensity.
5. VN Video Editor (iOS & Android)
High-Fidelity Multi-Track Mobile App
- Save the 33-point
.cubefile into your device's Files or Downloads folder. - Open VN Video Editor, tap into your timeline project, and select your video clip.
- Tap Filter on the bottom toolbar, then swipe over to the My Filter tab.
- Tap + Add / Import Filter > select File Manager > choose your downloaded LUT.
- Create a folder named MonoLUTs to keep presets organized. Tap the filter to apply it and drag the intensity slider between 50% and 80%.
3D LUT Grid Sizes: 17x vs 33x vs 65x Explained
A 3D LUT works by sampling RGB values in a 3-dimensional cube lattice. Intermediate color coordinates between vertices are calculated through trilinear or tetrahedral interpolation:
| Grid Size | Sample Points (N³) | File Size | Optimal Target | Precision / Artifact Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 × 17 × 17 | 4,913 nodes | ~150 KB | Wireless Monitors & Low-GPU Mobile | Can produce minor banding on gentle sky gradients |
| 33 × 33 × 33 | 35,937 nodes | ~1.2 MB | CapCut, Premiere Pro, FCP & DaVinci | Universal standard · Zero banding, real-time playback |
| 65 × 65 × 65 | 274,625 nodes | ~9.5 MB | DaVinci Resolve Studio Mastering | Extreme mathematical accuracy for 32-bit floating point |
Field Troubleshooting: Diagnostic Checklist
Cause: Double-LUTting. Applying a technical camera conversion LUT (e.g. S-Log to 709) onto footage that has already been converted or recorded in standard Rec.709 SDR.
Fix: Verify clip gamma; use creative film looks only.Cause: Applying steep contrast curves onto 8-bit 4:2:0 compressed video files (256 color shades per channel cannot stretch across wide gamuts).
Fix: Apply 0.5% fine film grain or reduce LUT opacity to 50%.Cause: Lowering exposure after the LUT node. Once a 3D LUT hard-clamps values exceeding 1.0 (100 IRE), post-LUT wheels pull down grey clipping.
Fix: Move your exposure balance node BEFORE the LUT transform.Cause: Applying a stylized Rec.709 film look directly onto flat Log or RAW sensor data without camera normalization.
Fix: Add a technical Rec.709 transform on the intermediate node.Ready to Grade Your Footage?
